Provenance
Edwin Pauley, class of 1923, and the Rockefeller Foundation provided funds to purchase in 1952 some 200 volumes of original, published narratives of the men who explored and settled the West from Charles B. Voorhis, a Pasadena Civic leader, who had collected the works over a period of 30 years. Subsequent to the purchase, Voorhis gave another 100 items to the collection. Along with rare editions of first-hand accounts, includes works by Bancroft, Land of Sunshine and Overland Weekly. The collection includes significant works related to the Mormon religion, including a very rare edition of the Book of Mormon.

Spine: In tact, horizontal wear present. section lines visible, but gold lines faded
Spine Lettering and Label: Black title ribbon in place. Smaller font title, arching work in “MORMON”
Cover: In tact. visible wear and scuff marks.
Binding: Inside pastedown separating from spine. Front and back endpapers present.
Title Page: Present. Triangular cockling folds on corners of pages. No visible writing or markings
Text: Intact, no visible markings or writing. Triangular cockling folds present in text block
Inscription: Back end paper verso in pencil bottom margin: “L*** Carpenter Brother(?) ***** book” difficult to decipher.
